Attackers Identified by Cameras Following
An Assault on Elderly Resident

As Reported by WGAL-TV 8 -- An attack on an elderly man in the city of Lancaster was caught on camera. News 8 has provided the pictures and video of the incident, but some might find them disturbing. But without those images, police say they probably would not have been able to make an arrest. The victim, Naranjan Singh, 77, said he's glad cameras were rolling.

Inside the Lancaster Community Safety Coalition, someone keeps an eye on a network of cameras throughout the city. But when they focused in on Farnum Park recently, they spotted trouble. As Singh took his Sunday stroll, teens surrounded him. He tried to walk away, but one of the teens punched him."He began to run as best he could," said Bob Schellhamer of the Lancaster Community Safety Coalition.

But there was no escaping. Singh was knocked to the ground. He described the attack with help from a translator.

"He asked him, 'Do you speak English?' He said, 'No.' Then he started hitting him … He started punching him. He got scared and fell down." Singh and the teens had no idea someone watched the whole thing unfold."When it got to the point that a crime was taking place, it was phoned into police," said Schellhamer. The teens were gone by the time police arrived. But investigators said they had all the evidence they needed to make an arrest."It's proof in this case (the camera) protects the elderly and the frail," said Schellhamer.Singh still has bruises from the attack on both hands and his knee.He used to walk and exercise in Farnum Park every day, sometimes even twice a day, but the attack has changed that. A translator said:

"No, he don't come no more at all …He's scared. That's what he's saying." Singh fears being targeted again, so he doesn't leave his house. The only peace he has is that the teen arrested is now facing an assault charge."To him the camera was like his god who helped him and searched the person out," the translator said.
